When the Statue of Liberty was completed in France, it couldn’t be shipped to the United States in one piece.
Instead, the 450,000-pound statue was carefully disassembled into 350 individual pieces, packed into 214 wooden crates, and transported across the Atlantic by ship.
After arriving in New York Harbor in 1885, workers spent nearly a year reassembling the statue before it was officially dedicated in 1886. Today, the Statue of Liberty stands as one of the world’s most recognizable
landmarks and remains a powerful symbol of freedom and welcome.
Even one of the world’s biggest moves came down to careful planning, organization, and coordination.
Thanks to that preparation, the Statue of Liberty made its journey safely across the Atlantic and has stood in its permanent home for nearly 140 years, welcoming generations of New Yorkers and millions of visitors from around the world.
